About

Surfing started in Margaret River in the summer of 1961/62 when Cliff Hills, Rob Birch and their mates left the relatively well known break of Yallingup to travel south down dirt roads to a new and heavy break - Main Break at Margaret River.

Shrouded in semi-secrecy for much of the sixties, Main Break rose to prominence when the Australian National Titles were held there in 1969.  The event was an outstanding success, with perfect large surf, and stand out performances by Nat Young (winner of the Open title) and Wayne Lynch (Junior winner).

As surfing developed in the region and more surfers moved permanently to the expanding township of Margaret River, the Margaret River Boardriders was formed.  The club has a long and illustrious history, with many competition wins to its credit.
