Huey brings on the Swell
Nice swell lines wrapping in to Cowaramup Bay greeted the contestants for the opening round of the Margaret River Boardriders for the 2009 /2010 season. First up were the owls, and rookie Dave ‘Ding’ Englet threw down the gauntlet on his first ride with a couple of verticle backhand snaps thus setting the pace for the rest of the day and giving him his first win. Club stalwart B-rad Cowan made the bumpy conditions look smooth and his bottom turn snap combos kept the pressure right on the rookie. Dave “Beachboy” Bourke found rhythm on his backhand ,although a bit late, but managed to outscore Mal Caithness who waited for the Tsunami that never came.
The open division was a five man final with Andy “Fonz” Sheridan getting the wave of the day to just pip Matt Baldock who’s consistent attack was just unreal to watch. Not far behind was Blair ‘the flare’ Elton knocking brother Chad into fourth place with Jethro “1000 miles” Hedstrom bringing up the rear.
Outstanding young surfer Creed Mc Taggert’s great wave selection and polished approach gave him the win in the junior division from Shaun Green and Riley Holley ,fresh back from Bali finished a close third. Josh Bourke’s snappy backhand surfing gave him the edge in the cadets over a fast improving Jack McCaulay. Ellie McCaulay pushed the boys all the way and wrapped up the points for the girls division.
