The righthanders at the rivermouth set the stage for the double a rated round eight, the final competition for the 2009-2010 Margaret River Boardriders club.

Rain squalls combined with the gusty norwest wind fanned the fast peeling rights, opening up the barrells as they hit the shallow sand bank.

After a long season the open division was still up for grabs between old stagers Dave Mcauley and Andrew Sherriden. Both made the final setting up a battle with young guns Blake McDonald and Jethro Hedstrom. River rights are allways a big challenge for the goofy footers and D-Mac certainly had his work cut out for him against these three talented natural footers. With trademark re-entrys going beyond vertical Andy Sherro blasted his way into into first place, securing this years open title. Jethro,s surfing of late has stepped up a notch and his fast down the line attack saw him tie up a hard fought second spot over evergreen wave shredder, Dave McMaculey. Blake McDonald threaded an awsome barrel in his semi but was unable to find another, sewing up forth position in the final.

The Deep Heat division (senior mens) final proved that Goofyfooters can win at the river rights with Brad Cowan milking the best waves to come through to take first place and another senior title. James Clark surfed with great spontenaety to secure second place with Mick shaw third, edging newcomer Clint McGwirter into fourth spot.

The Junior Division saw Robbie Woods wave selection and great style tie up first place with big turns on a peeling set wave sealing the deal early in the final. Stylemaster Shaun Green went wave for wave against surf mate Riley Holley and took second place with a great wave late in the procedings with Riley unable to find his way out of some deep tubes coming third. With Huey dishing up some of the most challenging waves of the season, all the competitors put on a great display in the tricky but rewarding conditions that the rivermouth is well known for. Thanks to all for making this a great season for the club and looking foward to seeing you all again next october.

Overall results for the year…OPEN 1. Andrew Sherriden.2.Dave Mc Cauley. 3. Chad Elton. 4.Jethro Hedstrom.

CADETS 1. Josh Bourke. 2 Jed Mattinson. 3. Jacob Wilcox. 4 Jack Macaulay

GIRLS. 1 Bronte Macaulay. 2 Ellie Macauley 3. Laura Macaulay.

JUNIORS. 1 Shaun Green.2 Riley Holley. 3 Robbie Wood.

SENIOR MENS. 1 Brad Cowan 2 James Clarke 3 Tony Thomas 4. Matty Walters.

Club encouragement award Riley Holley… Best Clubman Doug Skullery.

Nice two foot racey rights greeted the grommets at the Rivermouth for Round five of the Margaret River Boardriders Club summer series.

The turnout was small so the cadets combined with the juniors and showed their older counterparts that their competitive drive is not lacking when it comes to club format surfing. Hugh Forward found his sealegs in the repercharge to go into the semifinals but got eliminated due to lack of good waves and not competitive spirit. The final saw Josh Burke surf well, executing some stylish roundhouse cutbacks to get nicely back into the powerzone to finish with rollercoaster floaters in the closeout shorebreak. Newcomer Olly Lee laid good foundations for the future with snappy turns and killer instinct coming from behind to snag second place from junior Riley Holley. Kyle Spence while placing fourth put in a great effort for his first ever comp and will be hard to beat when he really gets going.

The Open mens and the Owls were held at Southsides with nice three foot peaks consistently coming through the break. Dave Macauley was up to his usual tricks, driving his 5′10″ squaretail vertically through the lippy lefts sending the spray flying and taking another first place. Matt Baldock pushed him hard all the way and pulled off a nice reverse to finish in second place with Jethro Hedstrom stoked to clinch third spot from Andrew Sheridan.

The Senior Men took to the waves like old ducks to water, seeing Tony Thomas stage a massive comeback from the repercharge round to take first place with some classy backhand snaps on the longer lefthanders. Brad Cowan surfed well for second place and only just pushed Matty Walters into third by the slightest of margins. James Clark surfed with great spontaneity all day but the longer set waves deserted him and he took a well earnt forth.

Once again Ol’Huey served up the goods with great weather and fantastic waves and with only three rounds remaining the boys and girls will be using this great coast to further hone their surfing skills.

Many thanks to outgoing President Chad Elton and a warm welcome to Dave Macauley, taking the reins of this great club.

Check out all the latest updates at margaretriversurf.com.au and also a big thankyou to Dave Swainston at Jetset Travel. See you all on the 28th of March for round six, meeting at the Rivermouth 7.30 am.

Pumping three to four foot left and righthanders with the odd bigger set greeted the contestants at Noisys and Karates for Round 4 of the Margaret River Boardriders summer series. With the offshore still howling the Opens hit the briney first, taking advantage of the premium conditions. Jethro Hedstrom hammered the right handers, racking up plenty of great turns and finishing his waves stylishly with some nice tail slide floaters on the closeouts. With the boys heading to Sydney after winning the Jim Beam surftag against Yallingup it looks like Jethro’s great form is right on time. You can’t mention great form without Dave McCaulays name popping up and he absolutely ripped it up on the Noiseys lefts. His high speed turns and long rides had all eyes on the beach glued to him. Jamie Lumsden revelled in the great conditions and was a highlight in the freesurfing session later on. Final placings, Dave McCaulay, Jethro Hedstrom, Jamie Lumsden. Jarrad Davies. The Junior final saw Bronte McCauley tearing it up on her backyard break and leading for most of the final until Shaun Green pulled off a couple of nice reverses to post another win and extend his lead in the ratings. Laura McCaulay, Jayden O’ Neil and Riley Holley filled out the minor placings respectively, surfing well in the larger conditions . The Cadets made the waves look bigger by throwing their small frames and big hearts into the strong swell. Jacob Willcox impressed all with his no nonsense approach to the long lefts, surfing beyond his years with this being reflected in his wave scores that were as good as any of the other divisions on the day. Jed Mattinson was a bit shy at first but found confidence after his first wave and never looked back. Well done mate. Placings, Jacob Willcox first, Jed Mattinson second, The senior men were all stoked to get into some real waves this round with Neil Mattinson unstoppable on the peeling lefts. One wave he surfed through to the keyhole was an absolute beauty, racking up three great re-entrys and finishing with a nice snap in the shorey. Old stagers Tony Thomas and Doug Skullery carved it up with old Dougy pulling off the longest “Peter Garret” in history. Their dog eat dog approach was too much for newcomer Clint McWhirter who found out that the old boys camaraderie on the beach disappeared as soon they hit the water. Final placings, !st Neil Mattinson, 2nd Tony Thomas, 3rd Doug Skullery, 4th Clint McWhirter.
